Prevacid is a medication that is available over the counter for people who suffer from acid reflux. Acid Reflux, also known as gastric reflux and GERD is a painful problem that many people experience. Acid reflux occurs when acid from the stomach enters the esophagus. Some things that can cause this is eating spicy foods, or too much sugar. In these cases a simple antacid is enough to help stop the burning sensation, however this is not always the case

Some people suffer from chronic acid reflux, and this is not due to spicy foods, or a poor diet. Chronic acid reflux is the result of a lazy sphincter in the esophagus. The sphincter is the muscle that stops the acid from traveling from the stomach, into the throat. This is a special one-way muscle that lets food in, and keeps acid out. The best way to treat prevacid (without surgery) is to use what is called a proton-pump inhibitor. This is a medication that inhibits the pumps in the stomach that produce the acid. A proton pump inhibitor like Omeprazole (sold as Prilosec) or Lansoprazole (sold as Prevacid) will slow the production of acid. This will allow enough gastric acid to allow the digestion of food, but not an excess of acid that normally goes into the throat.
